"I never thought it was
a good idea," Gayleen Froese says of her debut CD. "From a marketing
perspective, I figured it would be a nightmare. But i can't help
what I write."
That first CD was a
collection of eerie voice and piano songs called Obituary.
It spoke about possessiveness, jealousy, schadenfreuede...all the unacknowledged
emotions that stalk love. Obituary was a darkly beautiful
album, but Gayleen didn't think it was anything people would care to hear.
She was wrong.
Obituary charted on campus radio stations and received excellent
reviews from across Canada. Gayleen was invited to showcase at NXNE
in Toronto, and western Canada's All Indie Weekend. CBC's Definitely
Not the Opera gave her an undiscovered artist award.
Using music to reach
people has been a strange experience for the 26 year old Saskatoon musician.
"Growing up, I preferred
being alone with my piano to playing with other kids."
Gayleen started piano
lessons at the age of seven, and later added voice lessons to her training.
While she acquiring a Bachelor's degree in Radio and Television Arts from
Toronto's Ryerson University, she learned the basics of digital recording,
and put together a demo.
For Obituary,
Don Schmid recorded Gayleen's music live to DAT at St. James Anglican Church
in Saskatoon. Her second CD, Chimera, was recorded on a digital
multitracker in her home.
"I wanted to do the
backing vocals a hundred times if I had to, without some poor guy in
the control booth having to listen to it. And besides, this was personal."
The result was a rich
and intimate album about illusions and belief that seems to come from a
larger story.
"I won't say there's
a coherent narrative between the songs," Gayleen says, "I don't think there
is. But there's definitely a theme. I tend to take an idea
and worry it to pieces."
Gayleen's CD release
date is February 26th, and her release party will follow on March 5th.
These days, she's busy performing live and polishing the videos she's worked
on throughout the past year.
Chimera is available
through mail order and will be officially released in late February.
Both Obituary and Chimera are on Saskatoon's Rockin'' Rod
Records label and available across Canada through FAB Distribution.
